Hurricane Flood Damage at Nanny’s House

Nanny stood at the back door of her home, she was almost two hundred miles from the coast of south Texas. Hurricane Ike came in roaring like a lion. The winds were a record high and the damage ranged from near total destruction in Galveston to major damage as far north as Tyler.

Nanny did not evacuate because she was miles from the shoreline. Hurricanes just never got this far north with their damage and destruction. Her home sat in a clump of old oaks, about three hundred yards from the river bank. Flooding had never been a problem in her area, but Ike could change that rapidly.

The flood damage water rushed up Nanny’s yard and into her house so fast, she couldn’t retreat fast enough to avoid being in the middle of this flood damage water. The water rushed across her living room, into her kitchen and the laundry room until it was a foot deep. The flood damage water reached so high up her wall she prayed it would stop before it reached the upper portion of her house, as she rushed up the stairs. She was hoping against hope, that the flood damage water would not force her out onto the roof.

It seemed only a matter of minutes, before the flood damage water had reached the upper floors and she stood in water a foot deep. It kept rising, so she climbed out onto the roof trying to signal the rescue teams that she was in real danger. Her little poodle was at her side, she never left her master’s side. The two of them sat on the roof and prayed for rescue.

It seemed hours until a rescue helicopter spotted the soaked and shivering pair. A rescuer and a basket was lowered to lift them into the safety of the helicopter and flown to an aide’s station where they would be treated for hypothermia. Nanny was still back in her precious home, everything was under water. Not only was the water flooding every room, the force of the wind and water was taking them down stream. She feared she would never restore her home after the swift flood damage had rushed through her home.

She had memories that could not be replaced. The happy marriage to James, mementos, photos, and gifts he had given to show her he loved her so much. Then there were her four children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. All her photos, scrubby pictures from both generations, the gifts for Christmas, Easter, birthdays and anniversaries, all washed away, never to be seen again. Her entire life was washed away with Ike. She was so traumatized, would she ever feel safe again? Every time it rained, would she pace the floor waiting for the water to rush in again?

Her furniture that did not wash away would be saturated with water causing more flood damage. Her beds, chairs, then there were her hardwood floors. James had installed them himself. The standing water would warp them and they would never be able to save them. The little garden shed James had built her, now in pieces and washing in many different directions. She would never forget this day for the remainder of her life. She would now live in fear of rain.
